Early access · Firefox on Mac and Android

Browsing rules your child can live with.

A Firefox extension on your child's computer or Android tablet, and an app on your phone. New sites wait for your OK, favourite sites get a daily time budget, and your child can ask for more right from the block page, without a fight.

Get it on Firefox Add-ons (coming soon)

What it does

You decide site by site. Everything else stays closed until you look at it.

New sites wait for you

Anything you haven't set up is blocked and shows up in your inbox. Allow it, give it a daily time, or keep it blocked, in one tap.

Daily time per site

Each site is always allowed, on a daily time budget, or blocked. Time only counts while the site is on screen and your child is using the device.

Ask instead of sneaking

The block page has a "Request access" button. Answer from your phone with a few minutes, "always", or "no", and the page opens by itself when you say yes.

Schedules that fit the week

Browsing hours per profile, like school days, weekends or holidays, each with its own time limits. Switch profiles for an hour, a few hours, or until tomorrow.

Time left, always visible

Your child sees how much time is left on a site and gets a warning before it runs out, so the end of the time isn't a surprise.

Today at a glance

See how long each site was used today and add more time for one site when it makes sense, like homework running long.

Sign-ins that make sense

"Sign in with Google" and similar logins work when they start from a site you allowed, and nowhere else.

Private tabs too

Private tabs are blocked whenever Firefox lets the extension see them. On a Mac set up with our script, private browsing is turned off.

Closed when in doubt

If the extension loses its connection for too long or is disconnected from your account, browsing stops instead of opening up.

How it works

  1. 1

    Install the extension

Add it to Firefox on the child's computer or Android tablet from Firefox Add-ons (coming soon). For a family Mac there is an optional setup script: it installs Firefox with the extension and turns off private browsing, and the child can't remove or disable the extension from Firefox. On other devices, including Android, it can be removed; alerts for that are planned.

  2. 2

    Pair it with your account

The extension shows a QR code and four words. Scan the code or type the words in the parent app.

  3. 3

    Manage from anywhere

Use the parent app on Android or in any browser. Changes reach the child's device in seconds.

What gets stored

Only what you need to make decisions, in your family's account.

Stored

  • The rules and schedules you set
  • Time used per site, per day
  • For sites that were blocked: the site, one example address and when it was tried
  • Your child's requests and your answers

Not stored

  • A history of the pages your child visits on allowed sites
  • What's on the pages, what your child types, or screenshots
  • Ads or trackers, here or in the apps

Data is kept in Google Firebase in the United States.

Where it runs

Today

  • Firefox on the computer (tested on macOS)
  • Firefox for Android (phones and tablets)
  • Parent app on Android and on the web

Not yet

  • Alerts when the extension is removed or a device stops checking in (planned)
  • Chrome and other browsers
  • iPhone and iPad (not supported)
